Scandinavian letters in Emacs

How do I get scandinavian letters to work on Emacs?

I connected to my home PC and used emacs in screen. I then tried to type a text document but Emacs didn't approve any scandinavian letter at all. How to enable support for scandinavian letters for Emacs? I use GNU Emacs 21.4.

Scandinavian letters work otherwise on the system.

Make a file .emacs in your home directory with this content:
