SATA, DVD, hdparm and smooth playback

Ok,

Now that Slackware 11 is out and we have all upgraded... I went out and bought a new PC.

It has an SATA harddrive and an IDE DVD. Smooth DVD playback is not possible without using hdparm -d1 /dev/hdX on my old PC so it must be the same on the new one.

The thing is, using a stock install of huge26.s, I am not able to use hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc .... I get the error

/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)

(I can mount /dev/hdc and read the drive do I know the drive is working and is /dev/hdc)

Does anyone have a new PC with SATA harddrives and an IDE DVD running Slackware 11?

Do you get smooth playback with your DVD? If so how did you accomplish it? How to you get hdparm to work on the DVD drive?

side note: I'm NOT trying to use hdparm on the SATA drives.

I hope someone has figured this out... if not this means no one has bought a new PC and put Slackware on it.

Thanks

I had a Siemens Amilo until yesterday with Slackware 11. A SATA harddisk and a IDE-DVD-Writer. The same problem. No dma available for /dev/hdc. The same message.

I solved the problem with the line

Code:
hdparm -X 67 -a 8 /dev/hdc
in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

With this line I got about 4,5 MB/sec with

Code:
hdparm -t /dev/hdc
.

Without this line only 600 KB/sec.

Playing Video-DVDs was no problem, the usage of mencoder was also no problem with the option -cache 20480. Then the ripping process run with 100%, without the -cache option the ripping process only run with about 60%.

But now the problem is solved, the Siemens Amilo has gone to a new owner ...

Fluxx.
