Post samba permissions local/remote

Im having an issue with samba permissions... it seems that when i mount the shares off my server, even using the username astro and the password setup for that, the filesystem mounts as that user..... however all the files get written to the remote share as root:users..... I cant figure out for the life of me where to fix this at, any ideas? my smb.conf is rather long but i can post it if need be.

I have:
valid users = @staff
read only = no
force group = staff
force create mode = 0660
force directory mode = 0775

then new files are owned by username, group staff

I found that Slackware Kuser encourages newbies to make every user a member of "root"
I prefer the RedHat convention of making every new user default group the same as the username
