@ RaptorX ... please try the same things with vim in konsole, then
grep the settings of vi vs. vim, or use vim instead. I seem to recall
similar issues years ago with vi, but vim in konsole does not have
those issues for me.

@ rob.rice ... you really have the wrong attitude. The preponderance
of evidence is that people who know how to configure Slackware are
running KDE4 without having to use such crude adjectives. As a
personal request, please stop ranting about Slackware and it's apps
in the Slackware forum. Slackware -current is for testing, and if
you have a real problem, and post real output of errors, you will
get real men who know how to run Slackware to help you.

So, don't use KDE 4.2.4, stick with Slack 12.2, or run XFce in Slackware 13.0. Linux is all about choice. Use what you whatever environment you want. Your rant is a bit over the top.
i agree with you, I am starting to not like KDE so I simply changed which window manager is my default, simple as that.

now I am not sure seeing that KDE can be little bit buggy why the guys working in Slackware are thinking about adding KDE4 in future releases, I mean, even the "stable" version is causing problems, what about a beta release then?

EDIT

just read this in a topic close to mine, i guess it answers me in some ways.

Slackers have known for some time that Pat eventually was going to adopt KDE 4.x and drop 3.5. The latest current branch reflects that path.

Traditionally, Pat does not adopt a package unless proven stable. Therefore I am inclined to believe Pat thinks KDE 4.2.1 is reasonably stable. Many reviewers seem to think the same, although bugs and compatibility issues remain.

This box is running KDE 4.2.4 in Slackware x86_64 -current.

The only KDE app that has given me problems is K3B, and it is a
known issue. That is why ./slackware64-current/extra/kde3-compat/
is included.

have you ever had any trouble with what i mentioned before??
not wanting to create slinks?

I just reinstalled slackware cause some programs where failing to display the windows when i opened them... I am sure it was KDE but reinstalling KDE didnt help, a slackware install was the easiest solution this time.

:S

I did not notice anything about creating slinks ... do you mean symlinks?

I create symlinks in konsole like this:
Code:
ln -s vmlinuz-generic-smp-2.6.27.7-smp vmlinuz
which I did yesterday on an install of Slackware-12.2 to an old box.
I don't use GUI apps for system configuration ... not ever.

To my knowledge I have never had a problem creating symlinks, once I
understood the syntax.

I also have on my boxen:
Code:
mingdao@silas64:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/vim
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4833944 2009-05-29 02:25 /usr/bin/vim*
mingdao@silas64:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/vi
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2009-06-27 09:49 /usr/bin/vi -> /usr/bin/vim*
mingdao@silas64:~$ which elvis
which: no elvis in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib64/java/bin:/usr/lib64/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/qt/bin:.)
I remove elvis (he's dead), and symlink vi to vim.

Have you tried XFCE? It is more "full featured" than Fluxbox or Openbox, yet it is lighter and simpler than KDE. I use it exclusively in Slackware.
You can still run KDE apps like K3B, and Kaffeine in XFCE.

Well KDE 4.x is not a crap software. It lacks the fine polish of long usage and testing, but definitely the core seems stable enough. KDE 4.2.x is decent on Debian as well, but I always miss the wide variety of apps on KDE 3.5.x series. It's a proven stable platform that's served well for a long time now.

The prime reason for choose a DE, for me, is the variety of apps available on it. Simply put, KDE has churned out a huge number of useful apps.

Porting so many useful applications to KDE 4.x series is going to take time and many of them will be abandoned on the wayside. Case in point: Quanta Plus. I don't believe there is any active KDE 4 developer porting Quanta Plus. A lot of useful KDE 3.5 apps have been left in the lurch. Yes, I know Qt and KDE 3.5 libraries will still work in KDE 4, but it will be clunky and lots of bits and pieces don't fit properly (e.g. the KDE 3 help system).

Perhaps the explanation from the developer of K3b is pertinent.

Yes, KDE 4 is a work in progress, but I find it to be very capable in day to day work situations as well as being an efficient environment in which to work once you make the adjustment from KD3. The future lies with applications depending on qt4. KDE 3 is now a dead end.
