Running Xwindows or No?

Hi,

I'm running a server under Slack. I can get everything running without Xwindows.

Installing Xwindows will take up hardisk space. But with my 40GB, that's not my concerned.

I'm concerned with reliability and speed.

So my question is if I installed Xwindows but logout of Xwindows when not using it, will the system be exactly the same as not using xwindows at all? My Slack is running MySQL and also acting as a print server.

X Windows

If you are running the system in init 5 (gui mode) the system will occupy some more space than not having Xwindows because of the X server running in the back.

If you plan to login in console mode and then start Xwindows using startx then your purpose will be served since in thus X-server will run only when the command is applied.

Basically by default, Slackware configures you to boot into runlevel 3, which is multiuser without X. Then you would startx to get into X of course. But installing X and only using it when you want shouldn't be any problem. When you exit out of X, its stops the processes, they don't keep running after that.

And GUI in Slackware is configured to run in runlevel 4 not 5 when editing your inittab file.
