one method i like to use if i have no choice but to get rpm is the following :
Code:
rpm2tgz nameoffile.rpm
you will then have a file called nameoffile.tgz
then as root you can type :
Code:
installpkg nameoffile.tgz
hope this helps.

Slack does have rpm (if you didn't uninstall it or haven't
chosen a newbie or expert install and chosen not to install
it) ...

All you need to do is

rpm -i --nodeps <package>

Its best to convert it to a tgz and make sure it doesn't overwrite or conflict with anything. if the binary was compiled against a different version of glibc it wont work anyways.

RPM is Redhat Package Management, but in the spirit of open source it's no longer just a Redhat thing. Not only is it used in the other RedHat based distros but it is available for other distributions as well.

To make a windows analogy, package management is something similar to add/remove programs merged with windows update. It's designed so that each package you install keeps track of what it installs so it can more easily be removed or upgraded later. It is also supposed to facilitate compatability by checking that if one package needs things from another package it will let you know and/or install the dependant package.

Its now known as the RPM Package Manager and not Redhat Package Manager.

Just like Windows 2000 is built on "new technology" technology!
