The short version,
is it possible to run KDE 4 applications in KDE 3.5.10?
I know Slackware 12.2 has the QT4 libraries installed as I've been running the QT4 versions of Opera for the last several months.
i'll try not to repeat much of what was said in another thread along this line,
but it has taken a new twist which is deserving of its own thread. Please read all the way to and through the last quote from the KDE forum. Thanks.
On 31 August, I was using Kopete to chat with a friend who uses using Yahoo Messenger. All went well. On Tuesday morning, 1 September, when I fired up Kopete the following message from Yahoo Admin. appeared:
"You are using an older version of Yahoo! Messenger that is no longer supported. Please upgrade by downloading the newest version by going to: http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.php"**
Actually, the first few times the message appeared they used the word, "obsolete" instead of it was "no longer supported."
I went to the KDE forum and left a message asking if there was a patch for Kopete and was told,
"Unfortunately this means you now need to upgrade to the KDE 4.3 or higher release of KDE in order to get the newer version of Kopete that uses Yahoo's newer protocols. ICQ will likely be fixed by doing the same."
After expressing my opinion that KDE 4.xx is not an upgrade
they responded with this:
"Note that it is possible in most distributions to have KDE 3 applications and KDE 4 applications installed alongside each other,
so you may be able to use Kopete from KDE 4, while still using KDE 3."
So, again, is it possible to do this, i.e., run Kopete from KDE 4.x, in KDE 3.5.10? I've noticed it is not broken out as a separate application in Slackware as it is in some other distributions. Ditto KMail.
Thanks.
**BTW, GazL wrote an excellent response as to why Yahoo would do this in post #99 of the following thread:
