Run level 4-logging-out-of-kde causes black screen freeze with kdm
I am using Slackware 13 32bit. I have recently changed to Run Level 4, whenever I log out, the screen turns black then freeze. Eventually, I have to restart the machine then change back to Run Level 3. With Run Level 3, Logging out is fine.

Anyone knows the problems?

I think you should first have a look at the kdm, Xorg and syslog log files for some hints about the eventual roots of the problem.

I have checked all the file you said, but they are not very helpful since my linux level is restricted.

When i switch back to kernel, the run level 4 logging out is fine. the problem is when i upgrade kernel, i may have missed something that cause the problems

Change your kdmrc file:

# Restart instead of resetting the local X-server after session exit.
# Use it if the server leaks memory etc. Default is false

I'm having issues with my sound card when using init runlevel 4 with kdm. It could be related to that.

After making the change, it works. Thanks very much
