rsync painfully slow over an nfs mount, between 2 vpn'ed pcs

hell oeveryone,
well i managed to fit it all in the title lol!

so basically i want to rsync -arP --delete <source dir> <dest dir>

thing is the source dir is an nfs mount of a pc that is on vpn with this pc..

i do the nfs mount properly and the rc.firewall allows vpn interface through unaffected... so i should be fine... except i'm not:

Test this on a local drive to see if it's an NFS issue?

well if its local drive no need for nfs, is there?
you probably mean some other lan pc on each vpn'ed pc..
well nfs is working on both vpn'ed pcs with their respective LAN's...
