Can I take any rpm for any distro and install it on slack using that installpkg function as long as I use rpm2tgz first?

NO

read about this program, it's sure to tell you you must verify everything first...

in theory, it can repackage something, sure... but there are big differences in the FS between redhat and slackware, and inconsistencies need to be worked out between the systems before the package can be applied.

rpm2tgz works mostly okay with Redhat/Fedora rpms. I have had very little success with Suse and Mandrake rpms.
