RPM distributions

I am both new to Linux and Slackware. I have been experimenting with other distro's on my P3 box. Currently I am running Slackware and like it a lot.

I am looking to install DansGuardian. I need a little gentle guidance on how to install packages and where to find them. I have used the package manager on some other distro's and I am sure that I can use it with Slackware.

Searching for DansGuardian packages yields all sorts of packages that look specific to the particular distro. Does this matter as long as it is an RPM?

Where would I find DansGuardian package for KDE package manager for Slackware?

Yeah the Distro can matter. According to DansGuardian home page there is no rpm for slackware yet. You can install it from source though. Loads of hits on google, here for example.

I would compile it from source...

Steps:
Code:
1) Click here to download the tarball
2) Extract the tarball 'tar -xzf <the-tarball.tar.gz>'
3) Open up a terminal (if you haven't done so already) and 'cd' into the extracted directory
4) ./configure
5) make
6) su
<enter root password>
7) make install
8) That's it

I have a package for Dansguardian here: http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac.../dansguardian/

Read about setting up Dansguardian in an article I wrote: http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...lackware:proxy

Thanks a bunch. I have been working on this today and have a problem. I am installing DansGuardian manually and have followed your directions exactly, even using the older version. (dansguardian-2.9.7.1-i486-1.tgz). The problem is that after the make install there is no /etc/rc.d/rc.dansguardian. In fact I have done a locate for rc.dans -i and there is no rc.dansguardian at all.

I assume that this is a problem with the configure, make, make install.

What do I do?

[EDIT]
I installed the package you put together and that seemed to work. Now for configuring and starting...

You will need at least 2.9.7.2 which fixed that bug. I should really update the SlackBuild...
