Resolution won't go above 1024x768[SOLVED]

I added the 1280x1024 modes to xorg.conf
I set the drivers to ati
LCD monitor
32 MB rage ati card

I restarted X and the resolution still 1024x768. There was no 1280 option under desktop properties on KDE either.

Did you set the right horizontal and vertical for your monitor in xorg.conf? Example below:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName "Monitor Model"
        HorizSync 30-107
        VertRefresh 48-120
EndSection

Use GTF:

Code:
gtf 1280 1024 65

  # 1280x1024 @ 65.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 69.09 kHz; pclk: 119.40 MHz
  Modeline "1280x1024_65.00" 119.40 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1063 -HSync +Vsync
Here it's the hsync: 69.09 part that's important. Copy it to your xorg.conf so that the monitor section contains something like this:

Code:
HorizSync 69.09 # This is the resolution
VertRefresh 65 # Stands for the refresh rate, in this case 65 Hz
Restart X and you should be fine.

P.S. Remember to use GTF with your own refresh rate, if your screen has 70 Hz instead of the 65 that I use you should change the line too:

Code:
gtf 1280 1024 70
Best of luck!

Hi,

How old is your card? I too have an old ati card that doesn't support textures larger than 1024 pixels (found out today). My guess is that all you have to do is disable composite/aiglx. Just edit your xorg.conf :
Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
   Option "AIGLX" "disable"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "disable"
EndSection

Fixed it with xorgconfig. This also fixed the problem of the scroll button on the mouse not working.

Hevoos, although not necessary in this case, I should point out that `cvt` is newer than `gtf` and should be used instead. Google for cvt to find out more info. Using gtf instead of cvt really doesn't make much of a difference, but for the sake of completeness I figured I should mention it.

Thank you for mentioning!

As you said there wasn't too much of a difference, but I'll recommend cvt in the future.
