resolution problems
 

Hi everyone.
Im running slack with base install of 8.1. Is there a way to turn off the Virtual Desktop - i think that's what it's called, you know, when you lower the resolution, it doesnt actually lower the X resolution, but only the monitor one, which leaved you scrolling around the edges to see what's on the whole screen. i've tried setting virtual = 0 0 (i think that was the command, it was too long ago that i tried it), and still nothing.
im also running on X 4.2.0 and Enlightenment (guess the version :( )





p.s. on a somewhat related note, did anyone have problems changing the skins/themes in gnome 1.4x (base 8.1 install). i cant change them, it just appears to select them and with no error message whatsoever, it doesnt change anything. and gtk2 is not backwards compatible so it doesnt make the gtk1 apps look nice. (gnome 2 seems to suck, at least the way i compiled it)

I think I understand your question and I know what it is in regards too. It is more in the area of what it is you actually desire. But I think if you edit /etc/X11/XF86Config (or possibly XF86Config-4) and remove the higher resolutions from the screens sections for your default color depth, then the desktop will be set to the maximum value that is present.

But if you desire that the desktop be reduced and enlarged as the screen resolution is changed on the fly, I do not think that is possible because it is set when X starts and the overall metrics cannot be altered without stopping and resarting the X server.

Perhaps this has helped, if not then post back so that your question may be clarified.

so there's no way to actually a reso change on the fly?

I checked the mail archive at XFree86.org and the same question was asked there recently back on 5 FEB. The link is below if you want to review it. The response did indicate a package that is *in the works* called X R&R.

To change your resolution on the fly it is 'CTRL ALT +' or 'CTRL ALT -'.
To kill the X server it's 'CTRL ALT <backspace>'
