Could you post your xf86config file, please - it sounds as if you need a small config amendment.

If you have setup the the dual boot system using LILO, then check your /etc/lilo.conf file for the framebuffer console settings. This sets the resolution for the command line interface (CLI). My /etc/lilo.conf just has vga = normal and starts in 800x600 resolution.

Check the /etc/X11/XF86Config file for the DefaultDepth setting. This sets the default resolution for the Xwindows interface.

Your XF86Config file shows single entries for the Horizontal and Vertical refresh frequencies, which may be locking your display to a single resolution.
There are other sites that deal specifically with Linux on laptops and with IBM ThinkPads in particular.
Take a look at http://personal.riverusers.com/~thegrendel/laptop1.html
