removing the emachine splash
 

ok, this is a pc question...but not a Linux question. I've been googling around and found nothing, but I figured I can find the answer here. I have an emachine pc that has an ugly emachine splash picture before going into lilo. I have re-formatted this pc and still the emachine picture is there. Can I remove this splash screen?

Methinks it part of the bios. I would see if there was an option to disable it, and if not see if there are any bios updates tha don't have it. Or get a new motherboard. Otherwise you are probably out of luck.

Yeah its in the bios. You should be able to turn it off. Just go into the bios by pushing one of the F<#> keys when you see the splash. Its usually F10 or something. Also you might try ESC.

Oh yeah DEL. I was thinking of my laptop for the F<#> stuff.

I thought it was hardwired into it-I went into the setup and didn't see anything there. The same dumb splash screen is on my Compaq pc....except it says COMPAQ. I've seen it on Gateways too....except it says GATEWAY. Very annoying and I think it slows down the boot some.

They're all in the bios, and there should be an option in there to disable it. I know Asus has them too, and on my A78NX-Delux mobo it allowed me to disable it.

It shouldn't really slow anything down.. It's just there, while it does most of the POST in the background..

It's not on this emachine BIOS and it's not on my Compaq BIOS. How would I go about flashing the BIOS or updating it?

Well, you need to find the right bios... and there are usually 2 places for that.
1) The official website for the pc or mobo manufacturers, provided you know the exact brand, model, and current bios version you have. But chances are slim-to-none that the newer ones will get rid of that screen.

2) 3rd party or cracked roms. I know there's a site which has all the roms you need for DVD/CD drives, but im sure there is one for mobos too. And if you find one, you'll need to find the identical bios as yours, but cracked.

You search for updates and make a boot floppy to flash. Though I doubt that they made new versions without the logo (wasn't the case with compaq).

you'd be better off putting up with the ugly splash than messing up a working BIOS... (just like plastic surgery unless it is seriously required it is general no no...)

This emachine was checking the RAM for errors....my other pc does that when it starts. I just couldn't see it (till I got an error) because of the white emachine splash screen. This emachine is just slow-I thought it was the splash screen making it slow...it probably has old/bad memory that makes the startup take forever (that's masked by an emachine logo).

What's your model? I have an eMachines M5105. There's a setting in BIOS named something like "silent booting", disable that will remove eMachine splash screen and show normal booting information instead.

I can confirm the name of that setting once I got home.

I have an emachine monster 550-silent boot doesn't sound familar, though.
