Release Candidate 3 is Here

Release Candidate 3 is here folks.

Code:

Fri Aug 24 20:08:37 UTC 2012
This is Slackware 14.0 release candidate 3, and is hopefully the last stop
on our long road to a stable Slackware release soon.  After hearing that
the 3.4.x kernel series will have long term support, I tested 3.4.9 hoping
that it would prove stable enough to use that as the release kernel, but
there are problems with an oops in kernel/time/clocksource.c every few boots.
Given that the 3.2.x series has been very stable, it seems prudent to stick
with that for release, and 3.2.28 is going to be the release kernel.  So,
one more round of testing.  Let me know if there are any problems.  Thanks!

Nice. But upgrading Perl always breaks some apps :)

storkus 08-24-2012 09:42 PM

I was at a local LUG meeting, which is dominated by ubuntunoids, and was telling them that we're sticking with kernel 3.2 and kde 4.8. One guy particularly flipped we didn't jump to 4.9 and said he needed to tell Pat off about it (or something like that, but he mentioned Pat by name). As for me, knowing we're sticking with 3.2 because 3.4 doesn't work all the time and knowing the endless problems that each kde release has makes me smile that at least those of us who are here know that Pat and family are looking out for us in the long run. That's why Slackware is ready when its ready and those other push out whether it's ready or not--and one big reason why I continue to run it year after year. :)

Oh, and as for Perl, I guess we'll see...

One question: what is the slack-desc warning in BTRFS that was gotten rid of with this update?

chess 08-24-2012 10:20 PM

I think this development cycle has been awesome with a great amount of interaction between users and Pat and the rest of the team. As a long time user, I know that Pat has always been very receptive to input via email, but it's great to see him post a lot here on LQ and incorporate changes/updates into Slackware based on comments from LQ users. Thanks to Pat and the whole team as well as everyone who tests and makes suggestions/bug reports either via email or here on LQ. Slackware 14.0 will clearly be a fantastic release -- and I hope folks visit the Slackware store to make a donation or buy a subscription to support the project.

Looking forward to -current becoming -stable. :-)

Agreed on all counts, chess! I've purchased my Slackware subscription. :)

Patrick, if you read this, I noticed on kernel.org that the stable mainline kernels have been upgraded to 3.5.x series with 3.5.2 being the current stable kernel. Has any testing began on 3.5.2 to see how viable it might be towards Slackware as a /testing release candidate kernel if 3.2.28 becomes the default kernel or will /testing be fairly empty this round?

sorinm 08-25-2012 03:33 AM

I still have the rtc_cmos error on one box.

Code:

Aug 25 11:30:11 mail udevd[1677]: could not find module by name='rtc_cmos'
It runs the huge kernel, maybe because that it still has the rtc_cmos error ?

I also have 2 other boxes with the generic kernel and initrd and the error is gone.

L.E. SOLVED. the old version of isapnp.conf was in /etc/modprobe.d. I don`t know how that remained there, on the other boxes when I upgraded udev, /etc/modprobe.d was empty.

Martinus2u 08-25-2012 07:14 AM

here's some of my observations. Generally the quality is high. :) I should add that some of them may be user error or related to my own kernel config, so i'm just throwing them out for people to confirm or reject. Most of them were observed when setting up a system at my parents' to which i have no easy access right now. That system uses KDE whilst most others use XFCE with the cairo dock.

All observed systems are 64bit with multilibs, custom kernels 3.4.8 with CK3 patch.
  1. superfluous konqueror launcher in the K menu bar after boot: solved by deleting and recreating the launcher area
  2. some auto mount issues, seem to be solved after going through system settings
  3. an internal card reader not recognizing memory cards: found a solution on the webz but not tested yet: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t...e2fda93da573ad
  4. DVDs and CDs can only be ejected after a waiting period or playing with the mount/eject buttons of the KDE tray applet. Apparently something holds a file lock, but lsof doesn't show the culprit.
  5. the .gvfs directory (apparently created by the fuse fs) sometimes appears corrupted (eg. question marks in ls -la) very strange observation and hard to trigger.
  6. Xine's standard configuration contains devices like /dev/dvd for which there is no udev rule. Udev needs a system restart after creating the rule (windows 98 feeling)
  7. incompatibility between fontconfig 2.9.0 and second life viewers. can be blamed on the viewers i guess
  8. talking about fonts: i understand there are legal issues in the US but the visual appearance needs tweaking
  9. new after RC3 upgrade: cairo dock 2.4.0 does not start. I'm still working on this one. Maybe need to upgrade cairo dock.
UPDATE: issue was solved through re-installation of the nvidia binary driver. Just for added info, cairo 3.0.2 is working fine, too.

Yes, it's been this way for the last couple of releases. Without 10-autohint.conf I personally find the fonts completely unbearable.

I just want to say congrats and thanks for the great job you did.
I'm really excited to install slackware 14 on some new devices (I test it on some Intel Core i7 ultrabooks and it works!!!). A 3.4 kernel would be great, but 3.2 is also a good one, and we can make an upgrade after.

Just an advice (my 2 cents)... You should improve your website.
Just an example... I want to make a donation to slackware after the installation of slackware 14. And I can't find any direct link to a donation page on the homepage.
There is just a link to the store. But, I didn't want to buy cds or dvds. I just want to make a donation. Perhaps that could be a good idea (I didn't know after if it increases the donations... It should...).

So, after some researches, I found the link on the store page. And last thing about that (and this one is REALLY subjective), don't work just with paypal... In my case, I want to give something, but I don't really want to do that through paypal (reasons?). So a way to give you directly a donation could be great! Or just have a choice. A microdonation system, like flattr, could also be a great idea! FSF made a list of possible ways to donate.
