Question regular user program causing system freeze

it's Unreal Tournament (Game of the Year Edition)...

i've installed it as a regular user in my home folder...

while i'm playing it, the computer freezes completely... i can't even switch console using CTRL+ALT+F6, etc... i'm forced to hit the reset button on the PC's case... the freeze doesn't happen at the same time always, sometimes after playing for 5 minutes, sometimes 30, etc... sometimes it doesn't freeze at all (which gives me some doubts about a hardware issue)...

so the thing is i'm quite concerned, because of the fact that the program doesn't do anything as root... seems like the circumstances are allowing for a regular user to bring the entire system down, which is very bad... of course it could also be a hardware issue but the computer only freezes with UT, i've let it run for weeks without reboot under regular use (web, email, chat, music, video, office, etc.) and it doesn't freeze or crash...

my video card is an NVIDIA TNT2 M64 (32MB), i'm using official driver version 1.0-6111... i know it's not the latest one, but the latest one won't work for me for some reason...

my distro is slackware 10.x (almost current) but the freeze also happens to me in 10.0...

maybe i should install some other 3d game or something to see if it's the video card that causes this when the GPU gets to a certain usage/temperature or something??

any input would be greatly appreciated!!

=)

One possibility is overheating, either of the CPU or the video card. You could check out overheating by taking the cover off of your computer and having an external fan blow onto the computer.

well, i did the thing with the external fan and it never froze even after playing for hours and hours...

looks like it's the video card that's overheating - the GPU's heatsink is VERY hot...

i imagined it wouldn't be the PC's CPU cuz it has a decent fan and i can compile all night long with usage in the high 90s and not have any problems...

so i guess i'll either attach a mini-fan to the GPU's heatsink or perhaps it's time for a more "modern" video card anyways... hehe...

anyways, thanks a lot, jailbait!!!

=)
