redirecting audio output

how possible is it to have one application directing audio to the headphone jack, say amarok for example, and simultaneously have another application(s), say mplayer and/or firefox outputting to the speakers?

Yeah, two soundcards, but then the problem of using two different audio devices -one using /dev/audio and the other /dev/dsp, maybe. And that means that only programs which use one or the other of those devices could be made to work. I'm really not at all sure, but it sounds like a can of worms... Good luck!
