hi all,

I've had a heck of a time trying to figure this thing out. I recently installed Slack 10.1. I wanted to upgrade to a 2.6.10 kernel for the new video 4 linux updates. So, I got a blah kernel from www.kernel.org, and then configured it for just what I needed to run. I finally got the kernel to compile, boot, and run. The problem is that it runs really really slow! This is even while not running Xwindows, and just being at command line. All compiles are super slow. I know it's not my computer since the 2.4.29 kernel worked just fine, and very up to speed. I'm recompiling a new scaled back kernel in which I removed a few more unneccessaries, and therefore can't include any logs to pour over at this moment. Any off hand ideas??? I will post logs once I give this new kernel a try. Has anyone else had this problem?

hi there,

following your description, i suppose that can be a problem with DMA. did you set it correct in your new kernel config?
or, what also can bring your system a bit slow, is filesystem debug sets in your kernel. ex. reiserfs. if you enable debug your system performance will decrease a lot.

When I run any 2.6.* kernel my system gets slower when compared to 2.4.*. hdparm -tT /dev/da reports 5% slower in text console, 10% slower when running X. glxgears reports 3-4% less frames per second. And in gkrellm I see 3-4% 'background' activity of the cpu, which is caused by X and gkrellm. With 2.4.* kernels this is 0%. I use my 2.4.* config file and make oldconfig to only choose the new options in 2.6. No idea why, so I stick to 2.4 as long as possible

I'm definately showing my newbieness with this question. When you recompile a new kernel and are running from that new kernel, do you have to make any changes to use any individually made modules you were using in the old kernel? IVTV for instance?

What is IVTV ?
When you install a new kernel, you install the modules too, you can't use old modules
with your new kernel, try modprobe one, it will complain

To speed up a little the system, I would check if there are not running services that I don't
use, for the required ones, I would check their config to see if it suits my needs and only
my needs. You have to learn your tools, X for example, what is the more productive
window manager you find is the best for you, learn to tweak it, disable unneeded services
here again...

so I tried to recompile my 2.6.10 kernel. Here are my results for hdparm -tT /dev/hda:

2.4.29 (base kernel installed w/ Slack)

cached - 504MB in 2sec = 252.00 MB/sec
buffered - 72MB in 3.01sec = 23.92 MB/sec

2.6.10 (self config from kernel.org)

cached - 56MB in 2.02sec = 27.66 MB/sec
buffered - 30MB in 3.15sec = 9.54 MB/sec

That's a HUGE gap in performance between the two! I'm sure I did something wrong, but don't know enough to see what it is!

i had the same problem with 2.6.10, nothing to do with DMA but try not select SMP support when you're doing the config. my problem anyways, was that DMA couldn't be enable. try to run this on your CLI:

hdparm -d1 /dev/hda
and run
hdparm -tT /dev/hda

if you get an output like DMA : (operation not permitted, its not letting you do DMA on your hard disk, try recompiling kernel again)

again to see what output you get on the 2.6.10

once DMA was enabled on my disk again everything went back to normal and i was able to use 2.6.10 peacefully

I just tried what you suggested, and I still got the same speed in 2.6.10. I got no errors with DMA

I tried a revision of your post flea.

I used hdparm -d1 -X udma2 /dev/hda since my bus is UDMA

I tried reconfiguring my kernel again last night to not include SMP. I did achieve a very slightly higher result from hdparm -tT. Still not anywhere close to the results achieved from my 2.4.29 kernel. Anyother suggestions? From looking at my config over and over again, it looks to me like I'm running a fairly slim kernel for what I need. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions...I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but should get time this weekend. When you said the last enable, did you mean this section:

CONFIG_PREEMPT=y

that's the only Preempt I found in the config.

btw...when you make a change to hard drive settings using hdparm, does that change stay no matter which kernel you boot to, or is that setting kernel specific?

I would think hdparm settings reside only in RAM so, they are lost with poweroff or reboot
