Read-Only disk Apon Partition

when i try to partition my ide hd, useing both fdisk and cfdisk it tells me the disk is read-only... is this some setting i gotta config? the only thing i could think of *mind u ima noobie at linux* is i have my ide hd on the "slave" part of the ide cable, though i have the pin config set to master. ne idea what could cause this Read-Only problem?

Make sure you have write permissions to the drive.
This means you will most likely have to run fdisk as root.
