I'm trying to figure out how to make wpa_supplicant connect to a wired network at boot. I know that for a wireless one needs to specify values of WLAN_WPA and WLAN_WPADRIVER but this obviously does not work for wired networks even if WLAN_WPADRIVER is set to "wired".
I suppose it could be started from rc.local but I understand rc.inet1.conf is the proper place to set these things.

I don't see whay you are doing this as wired interfaces are set up in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf. This file may also contain wireless settings which in turn may link to /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf for WPA settings. Alien Bob's wiki article may help whan setting up networking and Slackware.
