rc.local isn't executed at boot time

I wanted some shell commands to be executed at boot time, so I put them in rc.local file (/etc/rc.d/rc.local). But the script isn't being executed at startup. The same is with the rc.local_shutdown. What's wrong and how can it be fixed? I'm using Slackware 11.

Have you remembered to make it executable?

Code:
chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/rc.local
chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown
Remember that the script must begin with #!/bin/sh
Code:
#!/bin/sh
echo "This is rc.local - put your local commands here..."
