Randomly Freezing.... Slack10 w/ sata

Does anyone know why Slackware would just randomly freeze? Theres really no pattern to it. It will just lock up completely while i'm using it. It has done it while compiling the kernel, as well as while its just sitting there at the command line. I'm using the Intel IC5R Sata mobo w/ a western digital 120 gig hard drive.

Also, when it locks up, it seems to lock the hardware up too. For example, it will be frozen, and i will hit reset. When i hit reset, the system looks like it restarts, but just sits there at a blank screen. I actually have to force a power shutdown (holding the power button for 8 seconds) and then turn it back on. Its the most annoying thing.

Could it be a hardware problem? Or is it more likely a software problem.

Thanks!

I just found this thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...19#post1052219

Does anyone know if the issue number 1 for the ICH5 has been fixed? I think this is my problem.

Quote:
Intel ICH5, ICH5-R, ICH6
------------------------
Summary: No TCQ. Looks like a PATA controller, but with a few added,
non-standard SATA port controls. Hardware does not support hotplug.
"Coldplug" support is potentially feasible.

libata driver status: Production, but see issue #2, #3.
Recently work on issue #2 has improved the state of that issue.

drivers/ide driver status: Production, but see issue #1, #2.

Issue #1: Depending on BIOS settings, IDE driver may lock up computer
when probing drives.

Issue #2: Excessive interrupts are seen in some configurations.

Issue #3: "Enhanced mode" or "SATA-only mode" may need to be set in BIOS.
Thanks!

I also found this:
http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html

It says:
Quote:
Intel ICH5 / ICH5-R family supported in 2.4.22 and later kernels using drivers/ide's piix driver (but that driver locks up in many cases), and also (much more reliably) in libata's ata_piix driver, which is now (2004-02-25) of production quality. Fakeraid. (See fakeraid support details under Intel ICH6.)
How the hell can one consider a driver production quality if it locks up in many cases? This makes no sense.
