Random XWindows lock ups

Hello everyone,

I have slackware 10.1, which I have upgraded to the latest with swaret. My xwindows seems to lock up randomly, usually within 10 mins after I start it. The worst part is that I can still move the mouse pointer around but I can't click or do anything, because keyboard is useless at this point. I can, however ssh to that PC, and try to kill the xwindows process, which dies but it does not clear the screen, I have to reboot the PC.

I recompiled my kernel to 2.6.11.10, but I am still having the same problems. I have also formatted and installed slackware clean. Could I just be having a hardware problem? I am really puzzled by this one.

thanks

Did these lockups occur before you upgraded to current?

If they didn't, I would suggest staying with 10.1, and upgrading one package at a time with swaret, this will show you which program is causing the lockup.

Sorry it is not more diagnostic, perhaps you could ssh in after a lockup and get the results from various logs /var/log/messages etc........

You say the keyboard freezes up; are you able to switch to a different terminal? Using the "ps aux" command (as root) would allow you to see what program(s) are using up most of your available memory (which was my problem some time ago when this was happening) and will help you further debug the issue.

It's called X Window.
Please, give me the source where most newbies get "X Windows" instead of "X Window"...

Seems the infamous nVidia freeze.

Try this:

Get this driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-6629.html

jump to a console and ensure the X server isn't running
I'm not a Slackware guru but if Slack uses the same runlevel convention as SUSE or Mandriva jump to runlevel 3
Code:
init 3
Another way of doing this is stopping the X from /etc/init.d
Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm stop

or

/etc/init.d/kdm stop
Now run the installer and wait. There can be complaints about symlinks which you have to solve by hand, best of all: write the paths down and get rid of them. Rerun the nvidia installer and you should be done.

runlevel0, thank you for your suggestion! Right now it is using an nVidia driver (it is evident when I start X window, the big giant nVidia logo appears). Hopefully it will fix the problem that I have been having!

Could it be your screensaver is opengl & you don't have it set up?

Also other S.S.-related issues, but I don't remember them....

best
