Random X crash and incorrect VRAM values in xorg.conf


I can never manage an uptime longer than 15 hours. I get a constant and random X crash (X goes back with three very thin lines of random color vertically on the screen) anywhere from 1 minute after X comes up to 15 hours later.

Then again, this may be my fault, as I specified in the X configuration that I had 16MB of VRAM whereas the boot sequence only finds 4MB of dedicated VRAM. The card's an Intel i810, if that helps.

Anyone got any input on this?

Wow, thinking back this sounds like a really... REALLY stupid question.

I only ask because Windows called this card a 16MB card. If Linux is calling it a 4MB card, maybe I should agree with Linux.

Interesting!

Interesting! I went to edit the VRAM value in xorg.conf, and found that line was commented out... therefore,the incorrect VRAM value was ignored anyways.

Anyone else have any ideas why an Intel i810 would randomly blackscreen?

When it does it, the only way to recover is CTRL+ALT+DEL the system and reboot. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE does not reboot X.

Check out my DRI link in my sig.

It was originally written for the i810 driver (I use the i810 driver too.)

Has xorg.conf, even an older kernel config file that may help

I'm not sure if I have to recompile the kernel since your howto was written for 10.2 and I'm running 11.0, but I followed everything in the howto except that and have no acceleration. In /var/log/Xorg.0.log I see a warning about Direct Rendering being disabled.

Do I need to recompile the kernel in 11.0? I've never done that before and the thought of it kind of scares me, to be honest. I just got this box up and running yesterday and don't want to hose it just yet. On the other hand, it would be nice to get a 2.6.x kernel on this thing.

Three questions:
  1. Which kernel are you using? (huge26.s worked fine for me, as do most other Slackware kernels.(You did install the modules if using the 2.6 series? I just recompile for my acpi...I need acpi as <*>, not <M>)
  2. Did you run 'xorgconfig' or 'xorgsetup'?
  3. Did you check as root, or as a user?

I'm using bare from the CD, so bare.i kernel version 2.4.33.3 with no changes to it yet.

2.
I actually ran both, xorgsetup first then xorgconfig. I know, I know... newbie mistake, but I don't know how to fix it.

3.
I checked as user, then read the part in your howto about how sometimes only root can see the module activated so I checked again as root and still no go. glxinfo showed no both ways.

OK...You used xorgconfig

Try 'xorgsetup' as root. See if thats better, then test glxinfo as root, then if OK, test as user...

xorgsetup gives me an invalid X configuration, where X will not start at all. I had to cp the backup file back into place to get a working X box. Heh, Xbox.

I'm rather proud of myself. I recompiled the kernel without asking any questions at all. Sure, I read a lot, but I didn't have to ask any dumb questions like "Does xorg.conf have to have the right VRAM values?" LOL.

I got my kernel from Kernel.org. I'm running 2.6.19 according to uname -a.

This, however, did not fix my probelm, as neither root or my regular user are getting direct rendering.
