Random question about Openbox

I'm wondering. What is it that openbox does better than fluxbox?

Fluxbox is more feature rich and allows me to manage windows the way I want... Especially grouped/tabbed windows and easily configurable window transparencies.

I'm just interested in determining if openbox would be a better fit or not.

Are there many slackers the prefer to use openbox over fluxbox for any reason?

Has anybody tried using fluxbox as the backend window manager for various other Desktop Environments?

I don't know if it's better, but it's lighter and you can resize your windows anywhere. Besides, Fluxbox is not modular.

I would really like it if mr. Volkerding decided to include Openbox in the next Slack. Do I dare ask for LXDE?

Fluxbox may not be modular but you can hide the task bar and use another one if you choose. That's the only thing that could arguably be removed to make it 'modular'

On that note however, the maximized window size is controlled by the thickness of the tool bar and the slit (if both are always visible) and that would prevent proper display of windows with third party tool bars.

I suppose another 'feature' it's missing is a graphical pager when changing desktops and graphical atl-tab. However, I need neither of those.

I've been a *box user since the late 1990's, first Blackbox, then Fluxbox and finally Openbox. I like Fluxbox but it doesn't seem to be as stable as Openbox and I wouldn't have a need for the Fluxbox toolbar or tabs. I just noticed the last release was over two years ago, is Fluxbox still under active development?

Absence of atl-tab dialog in fluxbox is a deal breaker for me. Other than that fluxbox is realy great wm. I like its conf file more then xml based openbox, but you don't change your configuration file every day, so it's not a big deal. There is also very nice and simple animated iconify and restore that makes openbox eye candy but not resource intensive. There is many more openbox features that makes it my favorite wm.

So really, the solution is to add the two wanted features to openbox and everybody will be happy...
Well... I actually like the fb tool bar, so an external program would have to be added that uses the current openbox style.

I'm an openbox kinda guy. Fluxbox hasn't been updated in two years (as was pointed out a few posts ago), and openbox just feels more stable.

LXDE is not yet a fully mature environment IMO, at least when compared to XFCE. It certainly is lighter, though, and if you don't mind digging around in configuration files, it's a good DE.
