Random mount permissions?

Here is my fstab:
Code:
#/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ntfs defaults 0 0
 /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 ext3 defaults 0 0
 /dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults 1 1
#/dev/sda4 -extended-
  /dev/sda5 /mnt/sda5 ext3 defaults 0 0
  /dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
  /dev/sda7 /mnt/sda7 ext3 defaults 0 0
  /dev/sda8 /mnt/sda8 ext3 defaults 0 0
sda1 is my windows partition, I've just been testing so they won't always be uncommented, I just have it there for reference and will use mount when I need to. But when I run 'sudo mount -a', I am able to access everything but sda1 (Windows) and sda5 (my backup partition.) I can only access sda1 and sda5 when I am root. I'm not saying that I particularly need to have these not protected, I guess it's good that I need to be root to access them, but it just kind of bothers me, there is no reason I shouldn't be able to get into them.
Here is ls -l
Code:
dr-x------ 1 root root 20480 2008-03-16 22:01 sda1
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4096 2008-03-22 16:40 sda2
drw-rw-rw- 10 root root 4096 2008-03-22 10:52 sda5
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2008-01-12 01:02 sda7
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2008-03-22 07:47 sda8
What's with the random permissions for sda1 and sda5?
Also, every time I mount anything, it shows up on my desktop, this is ok for flash drives, but is there a way I can make it so it doesn't show up on my desktop and in nautilus? (I get an entry on the side for every partition when I run 'nautilus --browser')

Here's the fstab line for my windows xp partition
Code:
/dev/hda2 /winxp ntfs ro,umask=1000 1 0
The nfts fs is read-only in linux - I've put the ro option just to remind me of this. The umask option sets the permissions so that any user can access it. If you want read-write then use ntfs-3g.

I'm not sure what's up with the permissions on /mnt/sda5.
