Ramifications to testing 2.6.27.rc6 in my stable Slack
Hello Everyone,
Just a quick question for the experts. I have been reading that the 2,6,27 kernel will have native support for the RTL8187B wireless chipset. That is the chipset my laptop uses and I currently have to use ndiswrapper, which I would prefer not to do if I can get native kernel support. So, I would like to download and compile the new kernel to test it in my laptop. But, I am running Slack 12.1 (stable) and I was just curious if anyone can tell me if I should have any conerns about damaging my otherwise perfect install of Slackware. If the kernel doesn't work for me, I just revert back to using the 2.6.24-5. Any comments? Thanks in advance. Bob |
There's no problem with using a custom kernel, assuming you configure it correctly. Just make sure you leave yourself the menu option to boot from the existing kernel just in case you bork the configuration.

Thank you for your response..but, I guess I should have check the kernel.org site before I posted. Apparently, the 2.6.27 kernel is not available for download yet. Guess I'll just have to wait to try it.
