Looks like something futzed with the radeon module for your video card then. Prior to fglrx I also ran with stock untainted 3.8.8, and the radeon module just worked.As the3dfxdude said, try to look at the kernel ChangeLog wrt radeon.

I compiled the 3.8.9 kernel which was just released today I believe, and it works fine. So maybe it was just the 3.8.8 kernel for some reason

I also compiled 3.8.10 which was also released today and it works fine, maybe the 3.8.8 was an anomaly
