quote of the day

I installed Slackware 9.0 everything went well, and I'm pleased
with the installation, except for a quote of the day type program
that runs when I log in, all it does it print a different quote each
time I log in.
I find this extremely annoying and downright irritating sometimes.
I've tried looking thru the startup files to find where this program
is being initialized with no luck.
does anyone know how to get rid of this?

I had the same question a while back when I first installed Slack 9.0. Annoying isn't it??? These quotes are actually created by a game type program called fortune. Here is my thread and the responses http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=60279

I took the chmod -444 option, I think this just removed the execute permissions on the fortune files, preventing them from being run.

If you look in your profile file you will see a part that runs all files in a directory and thats where the fortune files are located, therefore they are run each log in.

Am I the only one who likes them? (Other than Patrick, of course.) I mean, I ignore them a lot when I'm intent on a problem or in a hurry but, usually, they're worth reading and some are downright hilarious.

I usually like the short quotes.

Those that are 2 or 3 paragraphs are annoying.

Well, not necessarily annoying, I just usually don't take the time to read them.

Yeah - granted some of them do run a bit long.

Glad it's not just me. I was wondering though - about the only time I hear about the program is when someone wants to get rid of it.

Well I guess I just don't get some of the humor. Frankly some of the quotes make no sense to me
