quick question about installing from source

i had to install ALSA from source because my sound wasn't working. before i removed the alsa packages using removepkg, they would show up in the installed package list using

ls /var/log/packages

and pkgtool, but after i ./configure make make installed alsa lib, alsa driver and alsa utils, and got my sound working. i tried ls /var/log/packages again but those three i just installed didn't show up. nor did they show up using pkgtool. why is that? do i have to update something?

What you see in /var/log/packages/* is Slackware packages installed through the "installpkg" command. If you compile from source, you bypass these.

so if it doesn't show up will i still be able to use removepkg with it? and how will i know what to type after the removepkg command? is it the same reason for pkgtool?

Nope. In order to use 'removepkg' you have to 'installpkg' first....

You can quite easaly create your own packages from the self-compiled software whit 'makepkg'; It makes updating/removing of software on your computer a lot easier.

like so (or google a bit more, there are quite a lot of these howto's..
