Quick N00b question

I wanna use my xmms with alsa drivers but when i change from OSS to alsa in the xmms configuration menu I get this error message if I'm logged in as user

Message: output format: 7
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1055 : (snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D2p failed: Permission denied
** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (hw:0,2): Permission denied
I can only use my alsa drivers if i log in as root !

so I typed:
ls -l /dev/snd/pcmC0D2p
crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 116, 18 Aug 29 09:47 /dev/snd/pcmC0D2p

As far as I know (very lil) that means root can read and write as well as users, others can only write. So how come I, users, can't open it?
Did I miss something and how can i use alsa as user?
oh an when i use OSS as root or normal user i receive an error message like:

libmikmod.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
(I'm playing my mp3 from a windows partition mounted) then the system hangs up and then I can hear my song.
Thx a lot in advance

The group is sys, not users. chgrp, if you must, to
audio, wheel or something and make yourself a
member of that group.
