QUICK Install Query

about six months ago i decided to take the plunge into linux and see what i was missing. at the time ubuntu was all the rage and i had an extra HD i wasn't using so i slapped it in there and installed it. however i just wasn't that impressed, i wanted to learn about command lines and things of that nature, so i just ignored it. well i was talking to a buddy last week and he was telling me about slackware, that some say it's to complicated but others enjoying the learning process it imposes. i think i'll be one of the later. i'm DL'ing the ver 13 distro on DVD. my only question is i want to replace ubuntu, so do i need to wipe my other drive first or just install it over top? and do i run the DVD from windows, ubuntu, or reboot?

You'll create a bootable DVD, so you put it in your drive and boot from it. What you do with your existing Linux partitions is up to you. Once you've booted from the DVD and logged in (as root, with no password), you can run fdisk or cfdisk to set up the partitions. If you want to leave your partitions as they are, you can just run "setup" and you'll be able to reformat them.

You can learn all about the CLI on any distro, but Slackware might give you more opportunity and incentive to do so than some others - it does for me, anyway.

ok well i'm trying to install but when i put the dvd in and reboot it hangs at a prompt screen with a blinking cursor like it's doing something for about 10 seconds, then just loads the system as normal. why isn't it recognizing the disc? in case all i got was an .iso filled with all the slackware files but it's not actually an install disc, i'm posting a picture. i'm just not familiar enough with the process to know what to do from here.

here's the dvd's contents..
