Question about some packages in extra

What is the reason that slackware includes php 4 in the installer and not 5. Do I need to put 5 in? I dont write any web pages, or host anything, is this just in case I am a programmer? This really just came to my attention due to the security update, and figured I should get my brain straight on this now :D

The udev alternate's, how come these are included too. Is it in case a computer may not work well with the udev included in Slack11 default installer, and maybe these will?

Thank you in advance.

AFAIK, php5 is not required for you, fogie. It's an extension to Apache for serving up webpages. Unless you have an app you want to install the absolutely requires it, I wouldn't install 5. (Why mess with something that works?)

PHP5 - you don't need it, only PHP applications might need it. Same goes for a lot of other software in Slackware. Apache - there is Apache 2.x for years now, and Slackware still uses the (still actively maintained) 1.3.x version. If your web applications don't require it, there is no need for the upgrade. Hey! THe Linux 2.4 kernel is not the latest and greatest, and no-one is required to upgrade to 2.6 (again, unless there is some reason for it, such as hardware support)

The important point is that the software is still being maintained, and bugs are squashed as they are found.

The old UDEV is there so that people with 2.4 kernels can still have a working udev implementation.
