question about kernel compiling?

hi..i have a question about kernel compiling..

1-if i want to add an option from the menuconfig am i must do
make menuconfig
make
make modules
make modules_install
make bzImage
????

or i can do make menuconfig then make modules then make modules_install then make bzImage and the new options will apply to the kernel?

cause its take a long time to compile a kernel ..
and i am asking this cuse i compiled the kernel many times and all i get is a blackscreenboot and after that i knew that i am should build framebuffer suppor
and i did that but there is no use the blackscreen still exist
i did
make menuconfig
then i chossed framebuffer suppor
then make && make modules && make modules_install && make bzImage
then i mv bzImage to /boot
then i booted but there is no use
any one have any idea

another question ..what is the use of .config and System.map in the /boot
and am i should to move them from /kernel to /boot??
thanx alot

Are your running LILO after moving your kernel to /boot?
System.map contains a list of locations where functions can be found in the kernel. Remember to match System.map name with vmlinuz one. IE: if you've vmlinuz-mycompile then you shoul've the corresponding System.map-mycompile.
Also you can avoid the blankscreen (but you won't have the nice tux in the console) by setting vga=normal in your lilo configuration.
