purple dots, on the monitor :)
 

hey guys, i have my 30 inch dell monitor hooked up to atiX1300 i am running ati drivers, and have another 17 inch monitor connected to vga port on the same video card.

now my 30 inch monitor has some kind of little purple dots, like video noise or something all over the gray colors. only gray colors are affected, monitor is fine, since it doesnt do it when it is connected to my another computer.

my monitor is operating at 60Hz refresh rate, which is max refresh rate that can be used on 2560x1600 res.

also my vsync and hsync is set by aticonfig itself, which appears to be ok.

as i said it only does it in X environment, in reg bash everything is fine, but again, in bash my res is not 2560x1600

my 17 inch is working fine, no noise there.

i tried to play with gamma and i can remove some of the noise if ill make it lighter so basically to change it from 1 to 1.25 (synched)is helping a little bit.

Any ideas why this is accruing?

If you take a screenshot and view on other monitor are dots on there? That should narrow it down to software vs hardware - maybe.

My 15" doesn't have this problem - want to swap?

Also, it sounds like if you downgrade the resolution that helps? Or did you not mean to imply that??

Make sure that your monitor and computer are plugged in a common plug of the electrical circuit.

dots are not visible if you are going to take a screenshot,in fact they are not visible even on the monitor at this moment, i think i know what is happening, but i am not 100% certain yet.

my video card is getting too hot after running on that res, and i think i need to upgrade my cooling, since it was not good from the beginning.

and nah thanks i am ok with my 30 inch, you can stick with your 15, sometime you might consider an upgrade for yourself:) lol

That's the highest resolution I've ever heard of anyone running. I can only wonder why you would want it that high.

HorizSync and VertRefresh must be exactly as in your monitor technical papers.

Did you try another resolution?
Purple dots can be "artifacts" if you overclocked your video card.
Do you use framebuffer?

cooling was not an issue :( my video card is working now at 49C and issue is still there.

i haven't over clocked my video card, and those purple dots are probably artifacts.

i have hardcoded my vertrefresh and horizsync into xorg.conf, killed X, relaunched it, and it is still happening.

it could be a video card itself as well, so i am not excluding this, so i am going to stop by the store to pickup another X1300, so i can see if that is an issue.

artifacts are going away only when i am dropping resolution to 1280x800 everything above that is showing purple dots. it is also not a KDE issue, since i have tried fluxbox and cholesterol, and both of those have the same issue.

My X session is not throwing any errors at any time, so log is clear from errors.


one of the things that i am breaking my head about is why after my screen was off all night, and i am turning it on in the morning, i dont see any dots, or none of that, and after working on a computer for about 15 minutes or so i am starting to have those dots appearing. :confused:
