Are you using a very low memory system? This happens when you try to run with less than 32MB or if you are using kde and don't have lots of memory. How much memory do you have and what desktop/windowmanager are you using.
In an xterm run 'top' to see how much resources are being used by each process. Maybe there's something running that shouldn't be.

I've had freaky mouse behaviour from not having the proper graphics card driver before (only on some PCs though).

Try using a window manager like fluxbox instead of KDE or Gnome. It uses alot less recources and may help with the mouse problem.

list the computer specifications. cpu speed, memory, video memory....

try running this..

init 3

that will exit any running X sessions and put you in a virtual terminal.

then try this..

xinit

that should start x without any window manager.

see if the mouse moves ok there.

Slackware will run quite well with old hardware. I run quite well with a 233MMX and 32MB RAM, but have also run with a P120-16MB RAM, by using fluxbox, blackbox or windowmaker. windowmaker is not quite as fast as fluxbox, but I like it because it's so easy to configure and is so distinctly UN-windows.
