Problems with Slack 10

i just finished loading up Slack 10 on a new box and i'm having problems with opening apps , like mozilla, nautilus on gnome, etc....
and when i log off , and log back in, my background on the desktop doesn't show up but when i go into Desktop Preferences>Desktop Background, the background is selected to the image i want, and i click on blank background and then when i switch back to the image that i want, it comes up fine.
i tried deleting all the .gnome directories in my home folder but it still doesn't work.
any help would be gladly appreciated.

TIA

log out and press ctrl+alt+F6 then stop all processes owned by you (log in as root then type "top").
not sure why this is happening though, need more info. If the above doesn't apply then try to narrow the problem down and post what you find.
edit: Does rebooting help? It's a quicker way to find if something is broken.
Hope this helps!

Try making a new user. Login as that user and see if you have the same problems. If there are no problems for the new user, try deleting all the hidden files (the ones that start with a .) from your /home/olduser directory, clearing out all the files from your /tmp directory (including the hidden ones), and rebooting. I'm sure that there is a simpler solution, but this has worked for me in the past. Kinda like using a bomb to swat a fly, nut whatever.

p.s. You'll lose all of the settings for that user, but it sounds like you can't use anything now anyway.

Good luck,
