[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi!

Im running Gentoo and Slackware on my system.
My Brother HL-2030 works fine in Gentoo, but it wont do anything in slackware.

Im running Slackware 13 amd64.

I rpmed the drivers just as I did in Gentoo, but it wont print.

lsusb:
Code:
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04f9:0027 Brother Industries, Ltd HL-2030 Laser Printer
CUPS gives me this:
Description: HL2030
Location:
Printer Driver: Brother HL2030 for CUPS
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://Brother/HL-2030%20series

What can I do?
Thanks very much for suggestions!

Hi,

Which driver are you using for the printer?

I've never had the need to use 'rpm' for my HL-series printers whenever using Slackware. I've used 'CUPS' to setup the printer. Sometimes the need to get the 'PPD' for some earlier Lasers. But the newer HL-2xxx printers install without a problem. Look at 'OpenPrinting database - Printer Listings' to get some additional information.

It does say that you should be using the 'hl1240' driver.

The above link and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

Hello,

Try to add your user to group "lp" as it may be an authorization problem. To add a user to group "lp":

Code:
gpasswd -a username lp
where username is your login

thx for your replies!

I added a new printer with the drivers for 1240 as you suggested.
Then the printer reacted and made some noise but didnt print.

I had a look at my /etc/group
and discovered the lp line looks weird:
Code:
lp:!:7:lp,jwaha
shouldnt the "!" be a "x"?
So I exchanged the ! with a x. Reboot - no luck.
BTW: "jwaha" is the user

What else can I do?

oh, and, the drivers I was using were the ones from the brother driver homepage.

PS: I had slackware12 before and the printer was running fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanx!

Hello,

I search this forum for threads on Brother printers and I found a rather long thread that might be of interest to you:

64-bit Driver for Brother Printer

I haven't read it completely but the last post seems to indicate a way for the driver to work on a 64-bit system.

Are you using the drivers from the Brother web site? I have an HL-2040 and it works fine with the Brother files for both USB and parallel. Cups detected it automagically once I installed the drivers.
