Problems with KDESU

Greetings
This problem has me quite upset because I have always been able to trust Slackware to only do what I tell it, no more and no less and I haven't the faintest of clues as to what could have precipitated this issue. It is my understanding that KDE strongly advises using their own "kdesu" whenever launching a graphic app as root by user. Apparently it provides an environment that preserves permissions and includes libraries important to KDE.

Problem - I commonly launch "kdesu dolphin" from the "run" dialogue box and recently this seemed to hang. So I did it from Konsole and it worked immediately and often, shortly after (2 mins or so) the "run" password box would finally appear. Now "kdesu dolphin" will not run even from command line and it just sits there, with no error messages, no output of any kind, let alone the "root password required" dialog box.

Any ideas?

While kdesu is 'hanging', watch it with top or htop to see if it is getting any cpu time, swapping, allocating a bunch of memory, waiting on other files, etc.

Also, try 'strace kdesu dolphin' and watch what files are being queried just before and while the hang is going on (if any). This could give you clues about what to search for next.

It used to be that after some upgrades to KDE or KDE programs you had to delete the "old" config settings for the program under ~/.kde and/or ~/.config for the new version of the program to work correctly. I haven't had to do this in a while, though.

Good luck!
