I have just installed Slackware 9.1 I installed all the default packages except kde, netscape, abiword and mozilla. My X11Congfig is working great at 1400x1050x24 after I changed my runlevel to 4. But here's where the problems start. When I start GNOME, the splashscreen is poping up, but when the Nautilus icon appear, it just stops. When I click the splash it disapears. The if I try to open Nautilus, Ephany or Galeon, they simply won't start. Alle the other programs seems to work though. Anyone have a clue about what causes this?
i had this problem once on mandrake it was a package that was missing from the install process my fault. can you run the install CD for slackware and get an upgrade path ? dont know much about slckware
How do I start Gnome in Slackware? Everytime I type 'startx' it starts KDE. Is there a .conf file I can modify someplace to get it to start Gnome, or else can I type 'start-gnome' or something similar at the command line?
Yes that is it. And for shagrat:
I too had a similar problem. Actually twice. Once there was some library missing and it wouldn't start GNOME and other application using gnome. (It was some accesibillity package or something) So just check out the X errors and if you see that GNOME doesn't find some file check your Slackware CD for the package that might contain it. And ofcourse there was once the problem that GNOME would hang and there were no errors when I tried to see what's the problem. So I just reinstalled all of GNOMEs packages and that helped. But I really hope that you just missed some library and won't have to reinstall gnome Good luck!
Ensure that the cdparanoia package is installed. Also, make sure all gnome/* packages are installed. If you open up a terminal and try running nautilus epiphany or galeon from there it should tell you what you're missing. I'm betting it's a segmentation fault and it should tell you what library it needs.
I did a fresh install withouth anything from the second CD so that I could install Dropline GNOME (using the --force option). When I tried to run the installer it complained that cdparanoia was missing. I remeber that I didden't install it previous either so I think that was the problem. Actually I'm doing the dropline install right now, sow I'm typing this from links ;-) I think it will work. Thanks for the help guys!
jspaceman: you need to edit your ~/.xinitrc file .... check out a how-to for the exact exec command and find your path for your gnome bin executable file
