Problems getting DSL on Linux

I've recently installed Slackware 10.1 on my computer, and I seem to have trouble getting my DSL connection to work. My DSL connection uses an external D-Link ADSL Modem (DSL 302G) connected to my ethernet port. The following are the details my ISP have provided regarding my DSL connection:

Operating Mode : G.992.1, G.DMT or ANSI T1.413 iss 2 but NOT G.Lite or G.992.2
VPI : 0
VCI : 100
Encapsulation: RFC 2364 (or "PPPoverATM, also known as "PPPoA")

ifconfig eth0 seems to locate my ethernet port, but that's the only evidence there is of its presence. There is no eth0 under /dev, and dhclient seems to be oblivious to its existence. Netconfig does not show any signs of having located anything, and i've even downloaded rp_pppoe, which does not work either.

I am using the very same connection with Windows XP, and so far without any trouble. Getting the connection running on Windows required no drivers. If it helps, i'm using an XTRA JetStream account, which is a New Zealand ISP.

I've poured over the forums and searched the internet diligently, but have failed to find any successful method of getting my connection up and running. I'm completely new to Linux, so please dumb your explanations down

Thanks

As shown in http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers...s/dsl302g.htm, actually http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers...G_PPPoA_NZ.zip you only need to get a dhcp lease from your modem. Try running netconfig and configuring it to use dhcp or edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and set the corresponding USE_DHCP[X] to "yes" where X is your eth number. Then reboot or run /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart

Oh and you don't need pppoe, since your isp uses pppoa and the identification is done by your modem.

Thanks a bunch for bringing rc.inet1.conf to my attention! I read somewhere that I had to set the gateway to 192.168.0.1, but didn't know how I could do this... until now. It's nice to have such helpful people available when you need assistance
