Question Problem with the 2.4 kernel on a Cyrix MediaGX system

I'm trying to install Slackware 8.1 on an old Cyrix MediaGX 3x system but the setup don't get past the line Checking 'hlt' instruction... OK . Most of the times I don't even get the OK.
The same thing happens with Redhat 7.2.

I hope someone can help me!

Perhaps you could try either of these two kerenel parameters from the kernel-parameters.txt file.

nohlt [BUGS=ARM]

no-hlt [BUGS=ix86]

The file doesn't provide any real explanation for what they do. But maybe they have something to do with your problem. Just a guess. The kernel source doesn't have a special cpu class for the MediaGX cpu.

I have worked on a unit once and I know the CPU is socket 7 based but it will not work in a pentium mobo chipset. (Because I tried it!)

Question

Hello,

I've also have problems trying to get Linux ( Slackware ZipSlack
9.0 ) to run on Cyrix MediaGX ( 180 Mhz ) .

I've tried to use no-hlt at the LILO command line
and it instead hang at the BogoMIPS loop.

hi,
I also have an old Cyrix 133mhz that stops at the "Checking 'hlt' instruction..." and I have no clue how to fix it. I noticed that the last post was in April so I hope there's someone out there that reads this stuff.
lol nice

update: I tried the no-hlt, now it stops at the mtrr section on regular boot, and stops at the BogoMIPS when I use an install floppy.
