problem with sound device in skype

hello everyone,
i have slackware 10.2 and recently installed skype.
when i log onto KDE from my account skype says that it has a problem with the sound device.
when i log on as root, it works fine.
i don't know the cause of the problem esp since i have managed to make it work with root. could it be smth with the audio device? or the mic? i checked that /dev/dsp has attributes lrwxrwxrwx. so it should be normally accessible from everyone. but i read somewhere that mic might be a different device/file under /dev/ (ie not dsp).. could it be the case?

i checked in Kmix and apart from the PCM and PC speaker sliders, i can switches (under 'switches' tab) for the other speaker outputs (surround, center and LFE, side and IEC958) but i haven't tested if these work, and 2 drop down boxes (with options front mic, rear mic, line and CD) in order to choose input source(s). i also get, under 'input' tab) a couple of sliders titled 'capture'?
i have choosen front mic as input source (in both drop down boxes) and pulled the capture sliders all the way up. still i get no sound input.

the module for the sound device i have, is 'snd_intel_hda.ko'

any ideas?

if all else fail
i am also thinking to perhaps removepkg the alsa-xxxx-1.0.9b-2.4.31-i486-1 packages that were installed during slackware installation. and install the latest 1.0.13 version..
note that while the packages state the kernel 2.4.31 that slack 10.2 came bundled with i have generated my own kernel 2.6.17.3 . do u think i should proceed with unistalling this alsa version and installing manually (cause the newer alsa packages come in .tar.bz2) on top the newer alsa version?

thank you for your help

I had the same problem in Slackware 10.2 while being with the 2.4 kernel. Once I moved to a 2.6 kernel, all problems vanished.
