I dind'nt know exactly what to write for the topic since this problem seems odd to me.
I had slackware 10.2 installed in my server. everything was running well, from ssh, to apache, php and mysql.
A few days ago, I installed slackware 11. I don't know if i misconfigured something, but the problem is this:
when I try to connect through ssh from a computer (even if it is inside my network) the time to connect is about 10 seconds (before, if I connected through the network it connected instantly). The other thing, which is even stranger is what happens with apache. If I try to connect to a page in documentRoot or to phpMyAdmin which I installed, the pages are retrieved very quickly. But if I try to access a user's public_html page, it takes lots of time (just like in ssh).
I don't know if the two problems are connected and what to do to solve them...
If i issue a wget to google the page is downloaded in a flash, but if I try to ping it or traceroute it, it takes a lot of time...
I'll add some thoughts in the mere hope of trying to trigger ideas:
Significant delays usually mean DNS resolving problems. If you are using static IP addresses then check that /etc/hosts lists the IP addresses and host names of all affected boxes. With dynamic IP addresses the DHCP server should maintain DNS look-ups.
That you seem to be experiencing problems even with the local network, the first test should be the ping command. Test with both an IP address and then a box name. You also might want to check the routing table and the default gateway assignment.
Also check /etc/resolv.conf to ensure that your box knows how to resolve DNS look-ups. A basic resolv.conf should look something like this:
# /etc/resolv.conf
# used to resolve DNS server look-ups
# first query this computer's hosts file
search localhost
# then search this computer for a local caching nameserver (e.g., dnsmasq)
nameserver 127.0.0.1
# then query local network server
nameserver 192.168.1.51
# then query outside DNS servers, usually automatically assigned by ISP
# ISP's primary DNS server:
# nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
# ISP's secondary DNS server:
# nameserver yy.yy.yy.zz
# ISP's tertiary DNS server:
# nameserver zz.zz.zz.zz
# add some Open Root Server Confederation servers in case ISP servers falter
# nameserver 199.166.24.253
Also related are /etc/hosts.conf, /etc/hosts.allow, and /etc/hosts.deny.
Another common issue is resolving ipv6. I simply disable ipv6 at my end, but that is not always an option for some people.
By chance do have backups through which you an compare your 10.2 config files to the 11.0 files? Using diff would reveal dissimilar files and that would be a starting point
Thanks a lot for your time to reply.
As I was reading through it, I remembered a thing you wrote in the end...Why not look at previous config files? ... Now I did... but it ain't enough... It is still very slow...
I tried to ping from the server the computer I was using to access it. With the ping, it is fast. If I try to ping the machine name, it answers "unknown host".
Http requests are the same as yesterday, but I changed a couple of things in the files, putting them closer to what they were before I changed to the new OS.
By the way, don'w know if this helps but I have a router with a modem, my IP is dynamic. My network IP is static. It was like that before, and still is...
Thanks for your time in trying to help me, but I don't need help anymore.
I just reinstalled slasckware and now it works just fine. In the previous installation I kept some apps, libs and other stuff (that i thought weren't needed) from installing. Now I just installed everything from the parts of the installation that I needed and everything worked ok.
