Problem with installation of applications

Hello...

I'm new to Slackware and have installed Slackware 10.1 and running KDE. I'm having problem while installing other softwares like Opera, AIM, etc. The Konsole tells me that those are not *.tgz file. No *.tar.gz or *.tgz file is working. Even KPackage is not able to help me out.

Can anybody throw me a line?

Thanks

It sounds like you are trying to install source packages as Slackware packages.

The only packages you can install with installpkg are ones specifically built for Slackware. Either from the official Slackware site, or some a site like LinuxPackages.net.

Packages like .tar.gz are source packages, which means you would need to compile them yourself to use them.

Thanks a lot for the response. Can you help me a bit? Can you tell me how to compile or from where I can get the instructions?

Thanks again.

'./configure; make' and as root 'make install' (read the README and INSTALL files for deviation from this standard procedure)
