problem with cdda2wav in slackware 12.0
 

i have a stock slackware 12.0 installation with regards to cdrtools. when i try to "cdda2wav dev=ATAPI:/dev/hda -S 40 -v titles -L 0 -B -J" i get no results. it seems to hang for a very long time then it reads and generates the wav and inf files. no artist/album/track info is recovered. are others having the same issue? i have managed to compile and install (in /usr/local) the latest cdrtools from source and this problem goes away. if there is a way to get the stock programs to work i would prefer to do things that way but otherwise i'll keep the new cdrtools and dump the stock ones. i have tried to specify the freedb location and port but that didn't work either with the stock install. odd thing is that if i talk to the server by hand i get the info i seek using the stock install. this was done as root (desperation) but i haven't tried this as my user.

i have some scripts (stable for a few years) that helps get the info and organizes it for the flac files i generate for my personal music library. when i tried the stock install of cdrtools they fail but they work just fine with the new install.

so i've gotten things to work but was wondering if others have the same problem (didn't see anything about this with a few searches but my searches could have been insufficient) or if there was a better set of options to get the artist/album/track info i want.

If compiling and using the latest version has fixed it, I'd just do that. But, you might try re-compiling the version that comes with Slackware.
The cdrtools package has not been upgraded or re-compiled for Slackware-12.0, so it may be that you've exposed a bug in cdrtools or library incompatibility from not re-compiling against latest kernel/glibc combination.

i hadn't thought about trying to recompile the source that came with slackware. i just figured i would go for the latest and see how that works. but it makes sense to try recompiling the source that came with slackware and see if that fixes the problem. simple solution.
