Problem with Amarok/Xine and mp3
Hello slackers!
When I play
some mp3 tracks with amarok I heard loud high pitches and whistles. I think that Xine has some trouble with Alsa.
This is what I've tried:
- Mplayer XXX.mp3 -> sound OK
Code:
mplayer 06-Heart\ Of\ Gold.mp3
MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.2.3 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU T2350 @ 1.86GHz (Family: 6, Model: 14, Stepping: 12)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 SSE SSE2
Playing 06-Heart Of Gold.mp3.
Audio file file format detected.

- Audacious XXX.mp3 -> sound OK
- madplay XXX.mp3 -> weird noise (it can't play any mp3 properly)
- madplay

Code:
madplay -v -b 16 06-Heart\ Of\ Gold.mp3

- xine using libmad/ffmpeg -> weird noise
- noatun player -> weird noise
I've changed the options available in xine "audio" and "engine" sections with no result. Besides there isn't any console parameter to force audio bit-depth like madplay "-b" option.
Also I've updated alsa to 1.0.17 and xine-lib using slackware-current packages but nothing changed.
Any ideas? I'm frustrated

It may be that you have a buggy MP3. Did you rip this yourself or did you get it from someone/somewhere else?
I'd recommend, if you can, play the file using mpg123 or mpg321, or some other player that you can use on the shell. But play it to STDOUT, and pipe that to lame set to encode to STDIN. Then see if your programs will play the new MP3. Like I said, it could be that you got a buggy MP3, and this should fix it.
mpg321 -s XXX.mp3 | lame - XXX2.mp3
