Problem to configure ad-hoc/Master wireless mode

hi, i've installed the Wireless NIC of D-Link DWA-510 in my Slackware 12.1 PC. when i've done wireless communication in "Managed" mode with the separate Access point it works fine. But now i want to make the Operation mode in the "Ad-Hoc or Master" mode so that i don't need any other separate access point. i tried to change the mode in the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and the /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf file but getting the error

"SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported
Error for Wireless request "SET mode"(8B06) : Set failed on device wlan0; Invalid argument
Error for Wireless request "SET Nickname"(8B1C) : Set failed on device wlan0; Operation not supported
"SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported.

Can anyone pls help.

i want to add that in the iwconfig it is showning the Ad-Hoc mode but it is not getting up. If i'm trying to activate it by "ifconfig wlan0 up" it is showing SIOCSIFFLAGS Operation not supported.
what's the problem??

Not all devices (or more accurately, drivers) support Ad-Hoc mode, and many don't support Master. If you are getting an "Operation not supported" message, then the device simply doesn't support that mode in it's current configuration.

hi, thanks for the reply . But it is showing in the iwconfig as Mode: Ad-Hoc but not becoming up. Is it for the same reason? the D-Link DWA-510 card shows it has both the ad-hoc and the managed mode. pls help

First try without the scripts.

ifdown (ifconfig) -> change mode / freq / ... (iwconfig) -> ifup (ifconfig)

On my systems, Atheros cards need to be if-downed before changing mode, etc.. Intel cards need not.
