Problem installing Slack 10
 

Hey, i just installed Slack on my machine, the installation went sweet... it is very confortable and its very friendly

BUT, when i boot my pc, the only message i got is GRUB, and thats it!!!!


What I did wrong???? i dont know what to do right now...


The first thing i did when i began installing, was getting the partitions done, and what i did is:

cfdisk, then a primary partition... which i made the booteable one... Whas that correct? Or i had to do that LATER?!!! :mad:

i think you shoud fdisk /mbr so that the MBR will get deleted ?

or you can edit /etc/lilo.conf and then run /sbin/lilo

Slack does not install grub by default.......so you must
have had another distro on this drive...........what partition
is / on???

I've seen this before. For me it was actually a BIOS problem. Rather than let the BIOS automatically detect the hard drives, I had to change it over to user-specified. The BIOS will still detect the drives, but it will then put in all the information needed. Once I did that, I was able to boot without trouble. Why did it work that way? Not sure. But I had the same problem with both GRUB and LILO before changing the BIOS.

GRUB Hangin!!! HELP!!!
 

I just installed Slackware 10 from 02 ISO's.

I have wrecked my head and brain over this but no use! : (

I have two hard drives:

one is For WinXP and is only 20GB SCSI.

Second is ATA IDE 80GB, on which i installed Slack.
I have given the whole 80GB to Slack BTW.

Everything is cool until i reboot after installation.

Same Grub issue. It just comes to a GRUB prompt and thats it!!

I have tried reversing the order of my drives within BIOS but still the same problem. Actually if the WinXP drive is the 1st drive in BIOS, the system just boots into XP. But when i reverse the order of the drives, i get the GRUB prompt and linux does'nt load.

I tried booting from the rescue disk (the 2nd Slackware CD), but after i login as 'root' i come to the linux prompt.
Since i am a complete noob at this, i dont know what to do next. I would like to edit the 'lilo.conf' file but dont know how to get to it. When i do a 'fdisk -l' at the prompt, i can see all the linux partitions. But i cant get to them.

There might be a very simple solution to this, specially with the experienced among us but i am very new to this.

Any help would be appreciated.

i think you just need to boot with cd1 ( or 2 ).
follow the onscreen instructions on how to boot your system.
( smth. like : " bare.i mount root=/dev/hd?? noinitrd....etc " )

then you can use " #liloconfig " to set it up.
choose " expert " mode, add linux ( and windows ), and install in the mbr.
you'll be asked which disk to install to , choose the correct one.

The problem has been SOLVED, the issue was that in an old installation, SuSE wrote in the MBR the GRUB Linux Loader, later i removed the partitions made by the OS, and finally installed slack..., so the only thing i had to do was installing LILO in the MBR, and then everything went ok...

PS: How do I erase all the info in the MBR? that would be useful... :o
